Understanding Minor Oral Surgery (MOS): What You Need to Know

If you've ever had a wisdom tooth that just won't stop aching, or you've been told your tooth is “impacted,” chances are you've heard about Minor Oral Surgery (MOS). While the name might sound intimidating, MOS is actually a straightforward and commonly performed dental procedure — and at Lau & Su Partners Dental, Bukit Jalil, we make the experience as smooth and stress-free as possible.
So, What Exactly Is MOS?
Minor Oral Surgery involves small surgical procedures done inside the mouth, often under local anaesthesia. The most common reason patients need MOS is to remove impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth. However, it’s also used for removing broken tooth roots, treating dental cysts, or even preparing the mouth for dentures or implants. Unlike major surgery, MOS is minimally invasive, doesn’t require general anaesthesia, and is usually completed in under two hours.

How Does the Procedure Work?
At Lau & Su Partners Dental, Bukit Jalil, the process begins with a thorough consultation and digital X-ray, all done in-house. This allows us to assess your condition on the spot — and in many cases, proceed with treatment on the same day.
Once you're comfortable and the area is numb, our experienced dentist gently makes a small incision to access the tooth or problem area. Depending on the complexity, the tooth may be removed whole or in smaller sections. The site is then cleaned and stitched if necessary. Most MOS procedures here take only about 1 to 1.5 hours, and patients are often surprised by how quick and painless it feels.

When Do You Need MOS?
You might need Minor Oral Surgery if you’re experiencing:
- Persistent pain or swelling at the back of your mouth
- Difficulty opening your mouth fully
- A wisdom tooth that’s growing sideways or hasn't fully emerged
- Recurrent infections or swelling around a partially erupted tooth
- A tooth that’s broken beneath the gum line
- Small lumps, cysts, or growths in your mouth that need to be examined or removed
If you’re facing any of these symptoms, don’t wait — early treatment can prevent further complications.

Recovery from Minor Oral Surgery is generally smooth, especially when the right aftercare is provided — and that’s exactly what we focus on at Lau & Su Partners Dental, Bukit Jalil. Common questions
Wisdom Tooth Removal — your questions answered
The things patients ask us most before starting treatment. If yours is not here, message us and a dentist will answer it.
Is lower wisdom tooth surgery painful?
Not during the procedure. The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic before anything starts, so what you feel is pressure and pushing rather than pain. Lower wisdom teeth are usually the more involved ones because of where their roots sit, which is why ours are handled by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Afterwards, expect swelling and soreness for three to five days, controlled with the painkillers we give you.
What decides the cost of removing an impacted wisdom tooth?
How the tooth is sitting. A wisdom tooth that has come through and can be lifted out is a simple extraction. One that is tilted, still under the gum or partly in the bone needs minor oral surgery, which takes longer and involves more. An X-ray at the consultation shows exactly which you are dealing with, so we can tell you the fee for your tooth before booking the surgery.
What is the difference between a simple extraction and minor oral surgery?
A simple extraction is for a tooth that has fully erupted and can be loosened and removed with forceps. Minor oral surgery is needed when the tooth is impacted — trapped under the gum or angled against the tooth in front — so the surgeon makes a small opening in the gum and sometimes divides the tooth to take it out in pieces. It sounds more dramatic than it feels, and it is routine work for our surgeon.
Why do I need an X-ray before a wisdom tooth is removed?
Because the important part of a wisdom tooth is the part you cannot see. The X-ray shows the shape and angle of the roots, how much bone surrounds them, and — for lower teeth — how close they run to the nerve that supplies feeling to your lip and chin. Planning the surgery around that picture is what keeps it safe and predictable; no surgeon should remove a wisdom tooth without one.
